The Ancient Manor

ighty and elegant, the Montepò Castle is a fortified structure that, for ten centuries, has watched over the north side of the countryside of Scansano, in the province of Grosseto. Built around an ancient parish church, the Castle was largely rebuilt during the 14th century, only to undergo further expansion in the Renaissance period. Today, it represents a precious model of an ancient Sienese manor, with a rectangular plan that is arranged around an internal courtyard, flanked by four corner towers with a square section joined by sturdy stone masonry structures. Typical are the terracotta roofs that surmount the four corner towers: their pentagonal arrangement, reminiscent of a diamond, gives them, even from a distance, a peculiar and immediately recognizable aspect. Today the Castle is the favorite home of the family of Jacopo Biondi Santi, who lived throughout the year and especially during the harvest. The Castle is also a point of reference for lovers of wine and the civilization of the vine, where it is possible to create itineraries for visiting the aging cellars and tasting the wines produced at the Castello di Montepò.
